You are eligible to apply if you meet all four qualifications:

  1. Community college student who is transferring to UC San Diego or SDSU for Fall 2019.
  2. Majoring in basic science, social science, engineering, pre-med, psychology, computer science, etc.
  3. Us citizen of permanent resident.
  4. Meet at least one of these three qualifications below:
    • Be of African American, Hispanic American, Native American/Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, Tongan, Samoan, Guamanian or other Pacific Islander descent.

Program Dates:

Eight week Program –

The Program will run from June 24, 2019 to August 16, 2019

This 8-week internship will begin the summer before you enter UC San Diego. The Program teaches aspiring undergraduate scientists about cancer and how disparities can influence cancer outcomes. Students are trained in bio-behavioral science labs where they learn about the scientific process through hands-on learning. Students gain a theoretical understanding of how cancer disparities develop and are sustained. They learn how to conduct research to discover ways to reduce cancer-linked disparities.

Students also learn how to conduct an in-depth analysis of the relevant scientific literature on their research topic, how to prepare an abstract for submission to a national scientific conference, and prepare a poster for presentation at a national conference. If the abstract they submit for the national scientific conference is accepted for presentation, they will be offered the travel funds needed to attend the conference.

In addition, students will be offered continued mentoring and guidance by the program faculty throughout the remainder of their undergraduate years at UC San Diego and SDSU. Students participating in the summer program are paid $400 a week for 40 hours per week over the eight-week summer program.

Since the National Institutes of Health funds our training program with the goal of increasing the diversity of future scientists and clinicians, it requires that we gather data from our student trainees to evaluate the effectiveness of our education program. For this reason, only students who provide their signed consent to participate in the program’s evaluation can participate in the training program.

Salary:

$3,200 ($400/week)

Plus possible Travel Scholarship Funding to Attend a Scientific Conference

Housing:

Unfortunately, our program does not have the financial capacity to provide housing. Below are some resources to help find affordable housing, sublets, roommates seeking roommates, and so forth.

On-campus housing:

Shared Research Housing spaces for summer 2018 are available between June 22nd and September 2nd. The on-campus housing program is unable to accommodate any request for housing outside of these dates. The location of the housing will be on the UC San Diego campus in the Eleanor Roosevelt Campus apartments.
