The Department of Urology offers a Society of Urologic Oncology-accredited two-year fellowship in urologic oncology. Our goal is to prepare aspiring urologic oncologists for a career characterized by leadership and innovation in urologic oncology, while providing a multidisciplinary and disease-based focus and understanding of urologic oncology.
The urologic oncology fellow participates directly in all complex urologic oncology surgeries at UC San Diego Health hospitals, and is present for multidisciplinary research and GU Oncology Tumor Board conferences.
Program Description
Year One
The first year of the program is mainly dedicated to clinical experience (research and administrative time is also provided). The fellow is primarily at Moores Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Monday through Thursday and on selected Fridays, the fellow operates with Drs. Kane, Derweesh, JK Parsons and Kader. The fellow also participates in Dr. Kane’s clinic as available, and runs their own clinic half a day per week. This comprehensive operative experience covers the breadth of urologic oncology, and includes experience in open, robot-assisted, and conventional and single-port laparoscopy. In addition, the fellow operates with GU oncology faculty at the San Diego VA Medical Center as cases of educational interest arise.
Year Two
The focus of the second year is research. We have a particular interest in clinical trials and outcomes research. The fellow has an opportunity during the research year to either take clinical trials and biostatistics courses, if primarily interested in outcomes research, or to focus on basic science research. Coursework can lead to a certificate in clinical trial design and biostatistics at the end of the research year, or in a master’s degree in public health. Experience is also available in pre-clinical surgical experimental models and investigations. In year two, the fellow spends two weeks with medical oncology as a specific rotation, and two weeks with radiation oncology as a specific rotation. They understand the method of scheduling delivery and follow-up of chemotherapy, biologic therapy, and radiation therapy.
Application
Eligible candidates must be US Citizens/Permanent residents who have received their residency training at an ACGME accredited Urology Residency Program. Our program is accredited by the Society of Urologic Oncology and accepts applications according to the policies of the SUO Fellowship Match Program.
